Driving Test

Driving Test,

The driving test consists of two elements: the theory and the practical test. Drivers must have passed their theory test before taking the practical test. David Searle can help pupils with both parts of the driving test.

Theory Driving Test

The theory test comprises of 2 sections. The first section consists of multiple-choice questions based on the following 3 books:

These books should be studied to learn the rules and skills that you will be tested on. Another useful book is the The Official DVSA Theory Test For Car Drivers which contains multiple choice questions from the whole theory test question bank, with answers and explanations.

In order to pass your theory test you need to correctly answer at least 43 out of 50 multiple choice questions.

The second section of the theory test is the hazard perception test. The hazard perception test is made up of 14 video clips that play an everyday road scene. 13 out of 14 clips contain one developing hazard whilst one of the clips contains 2 hazards. Depending on how fast you react to the developing hazards shown in the video clips, you can score up to 5 points per hazard.

In order to pass the hazard perception test you need to score at least 44 out of 75 hazard perceptions.

You must score a pass in both sections of the theory test to pass the overall test.

The theory test can be booked online through the DVSA website and to book your test you will need your:

  • UK driving licence number
  • Email address – you have to book by phone if you don’t have one
  • Credit or debit card

Practical Driving Test

You have 2 years after passing your theory test to take your practical driving test. If you passed your theory test over 2 years ago you will need to take it again before taking your practical test. You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before the day you take your practical driving test.

Driving lessons with David will ensure that you have learned the required skills needed to pass your practical driving test by using a detailed training programme which is split into two sections. Part 1 covers all the skills necessary to be able to drive the car competently (as well as the use a of Sat Nav) including learning all the relevant manoeuvres. Part 2 is gaining the knowledge and experience of driving in the town where you will be taking your test. This includes driving in a busy town with complex roundabouts, dual carriageways and so forth. Finally you will undertake a number of mock driving tests to ascertain whether you have reached the standard required to pass your test. Research shows that people who take a mock test are 40% more likely to pass the real thing.*

The practical test can be booked online through the DVSA website. This test takes about 40 minutes and the examiner will be looking for overall safe standards of driving. It will include one or two manoeuvres and also include approximately 10 minutes of independent driving. The pass rate is 15 or less minor driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.
